The Shambhala Library
Preservation is not nostalgia. It is continuity made usable.
Across Buddhist, Hindu, Vedic, Tantric, and contemplative traditions, important teachings often survive in vulnerable forms: manuscripts held in one place, oral instructions carried by a few people, untranslated works, fragmented commentaries, or sources that modern readers can no longer easily enter. The Shambhala Library is being developed as a long-horizon publishing and preservation mission for this living inheritance.
Shambhala Monks will bring together careful source study, responsible translation, contextual publishing, retreat companions, and contemporary books that return wisdom to practice. We cannot restore material that has truly disappeared. We can help safeguard what survives, illuminate what has been overlooked, and carry endangered or fragmented knowledge forward without flattening its depth.
Identify, document, digitise, and responsibly care for surviving manuscripts, teachings, records, and oral knowledge where access and permission allow.
Develop editions that keep language beside lineage, history, method, and ethical responsibility rather than reducing teachings to isolated quotations.
Create books and learning companions that help serious readers study, reflect, practise, and carry insight into compassionate action.

The Nalanda Horizon
Nalanda remains an inspiration and a standard: rigorous inquiry, contemplative discipline, transmission, and service.
For centuries, Nalanda gathered teachers and students around an extraordinary culture of study, debate, philosophy, medicine, language, contemplation, and spiritual practice. Its historic seat was destroyed in the 12th century, yet its surviving legacy continues across Asia and throughout living traditions.
Shambhala Foundation does not claim institutional succession from ancient Nalanda. We honour its example as a dharmic responsibility: to study carefully, preserve responsibly, publish beautifully, and ensure that wisdom remains available to future generations. This is a central focus of the Shambhala Monks and of the library we intend to build.
The future of wisdom depends upon the quality of the vessel that carries it.
